Sally's Story

"For the first time in 9 months, I'm wearing lipstick and earrings again"

Community Adviser, Helen, broke down in tears recently, as she recalled a client she has helped in recent months. When Helen first visited Sally*, she found a lady of 78, whose life had changed beyond recognition. Sally’s morale was low, and she was struggling to come to terms with her husband’s worsening vascular dementia.  She was particularly struggling with Phil’s care and every day conversations felt increasingly like she was trying to converse with a three-year-old. Her life as she knew it, was over.

Helen sat with her for two hours the first time, adopting the role of confidante as Sally opened up about her struggles. In addition to listening, Helen knew she could also help with the couple’s finances and a Blue Badge. Blue Badge applications are challenging, because they require the uploading of a digital photograph.

Helen obtained £3,000 of additional yearly income for the couple, through Attendance Allowance, a Council Tax reduction and water bill reduction.

When Helen saw them recently, she arrived to find a smiling Sally. Sally said ‘You are amazing Helen. You are good for my soul and good for my spirit. For the first time in nine months, I am wearing lipstick and earrings, because I’m feeling so much better. Thank you.’

Helen has not only given Sally her dignity back but also given the gift of hope. Together, with our donors, volunteers and staff, we give hope and relief to people who feel lost, lonely and overlooked.
